Livestock antibiotics found in waterways

Study detects chemicals near farms in Colorado river

By Jon Bonné MSNBC

Traces of antibiotics used to promote the health and increased growth of livestock and poultry are turning up in waterways, new research shows.

While testing at several sites along Colorado's Cache la Poudre River, aresearch team led by Ken Carlson, a Colorado State University civilengineering professor, discovered the presence of at least three antibioticsused only on food animals.

The compounds were not detected at the river's source near the ContinentalDivide, or near human waste treatment plants around Fort Colins, Colo. Butthey were found farther downriver close to large farms and feedlots. Thescientists' conclusion: Those operations were almost certainly the source. The livestock industry firmly insists it is able to manage the wasteproduced at such facilities.

"We're saying that doesn't appear to be completely the case," Carlson said."I think most people would agree ... these compounds should not be in our rivers."

Study is a first

A 2002 report by the U.S. Geological Survey highlighted the presence ofdozens of pharmaceuticals and other chemicals in the nation's streams andrivers, but this study appears to be the first time these chemicals havebeen pinpointed.

The three substances in question — monensin, salinomycin and narasin — areof interest because they are used exclusively in animal agriculture and arenot used on humans. Carlson found these substances not only in river waterbut in riverbed sediment as well, where concentrations of the antibioticswere up to 1,000 times greater than they were in the water.

The amounts found in the water are nearly infinitesimal, about 50 parts pertrillion at most. But their presence raises three concerns: a possiblecontamination of drinking water; an impact on fish and other aquatic animalssusceptible to long-term exposure; and the drugs' potential ability toprovide increased resistance to waterborne bacteria.

Monensin is given to cattle as a way to improve the health of their rumensand to help them grow more quickly. Salinomycin and narasin are usually usedto help reduce harmful bacteria in chickens' digestive tracts.

The environmental impact for any of the three is not clear, and is certainto prompt additional research and debate.

Industry questions findings

Gary Weber, executive director of regulatory affairs for the NationalCattlemen's Beef Association, questioned the study's methodology, particularly the detection of narasin at certain sites despite a lack ofnearby poultry farms. He believes the compounds may have been misidentifiedor may be from other sources.

"We just don't think it's from livestock operations at all," Weber said. "Wehave a question about what they're finding."

The three substances, part of a group of antibiotics known as ionophores, not only keep food animals healthy but can help them grow faster and withless feed.

Livestock and poultry producers have worked to minimize any remainingtraces, or residue, of these drugs from meat intended for human consumption. But most of them strongly support the use of ionophores as a regular part ofraising cattle and chickens.

Debate over definition of antibiotics

Many in the industry won't even acknowledge ionophores to be antibiotics, though the Food and Drug Administration classifies them as such. In 2003,members of the cattlemen's group sought to petition the FDA to reclassifyionophores as the bovine equivalent of a food supplement. They eased thatstance after an FDA guidance document concluded the human health impactswere likely minimal.

Though agricultural groups maintain these compounds are of no concern tohumans, there is little clear research about the long-term health impacts.

"While low concentrations are not necessarily a problem, we just don't knowenough to say, 'Oh, these are low concentrations. Let's not worry aboutthat,'" said Margaret Mellon, senior scientist at the Union of Concerned Scientists.

In larger doses, they have proven dangerous to animals for which they arenot approved. Monensin has been shown to cause poisoning in horses, andfirms that produce it warn against allowing them, or laying hens, anycontact with the drug. Pigs and turkeys exposed to narasin have also died. ANew Zealand farm worker fell seriously ill after exposure to salinomycingranules.

Worries over greater resistance

Ellen Silbergold, a Johns Hopkins University professor of environmentalhealth sciences who studies the impact of animal antibiotics on humans, saidthe largest worry is that otherwise harmless bacteria in streams andrivers — which concentrate in sediment, where the largest amounts ofantibiotics were detected — might develop better antibiotic resistance whenexposed to ambient levels of drugs used by livestock producers.

"The industry is obviously concerned about them because they're trying tokeep them out of our consumer products," Silbergold said.

While federal regulations focus on the toxicity of runoff and wasteemissions from large animal operations, there is little attention to theresidue from medicines, and little monitoring of less apparent sources ofpossible contamination, including the pools, or "lagoons," used by largelivestock operations to process animal waste.

In addition to animal medicines, Carlson found the presence of fivetetracycline antibiotics used in both human and veterinary medicine.

Ed Furlong, a USGS research chemist who helped produce the 2002 study, saidthe latest findings are helpful in narrowing possible sources ofcontamination and developing better water management policies, but shouldn'tbe used to start assigning blame.

He noted that the concentrations in the Colorado study are too small to havemuch direct human impact: "You'd need to drink about a million liters ofwater from these susceptible sites."

Carlson acknowledged it was not clear whether the antibiotics might beharmful, but he plans additional research to pinpoint exactly how thechemicals made their way into the river.

"There's really only one place they could be coming from," he said. "Now weneed to figure out how they're getting there."

Growing Healthy Kids

I orginally posted this on my website (http://www.barefootmerchant.com) under newsletters. I think it is such an important message that I'm sharing it with you today.

Making a Difference In the Future Of Our Families

More U.S. children age 3 – 14 die of cancer than any other disease.
U.S. leads the world in Juvenile diabetes
70% of U.S. children have elevated cholesterol

In 1996 there were more than 1 million American children on a daily dose of Ritalin (Newsweek, March 18, 1996)
Asthma deaths in children ages 5 to 15 more than doubled in the past decade.
As many as 1 in every 3 pregnancies now ends in miscarriage. (Newsweek, Aug. 15 1988)

Childhood obesity has risen more than 54% since the mid 1960’s (Dr. W.H. Dietz, Tufts University School of Medicine)
75% of teen’s diets do not meet even the minimum daily requirements.

99% or Americans are deficient in some critical minerals
At every socio-economic level, more than 50% are malnourished. (USDA Joint Task Force, mid 1980’s)

Does your child have any of these symptoms?
Sick a lot
Hard to wake up
Poor attention span
Can’t focus
Wheezing
Poor school performance
Nosebleeds
Hyperactivity
Dark circles under the eyes
Recurrent ear infections
Frequent colds
Allergies
Stomach aches
Headaches Bed wetting

Dr. Linus Pauling concluded that it is possible to dramatically increase the health, and even the amount of years a child will live. What children are exposed to Environmentally And Nutritionally

Everything that comes in contact with their skin...will eventually (and in many cases immediately) end up in the child’s blood stream. This is true for adults too!

Toxic chemicals enter the brain(confusion, lack of focus, poor memory, headaches, depression, etc.)

Toxic chemicals enter the liver and other organs (can set the stage for cancer, allergies, poor immune system, miscarriage, reproductive problems. Etc.)

Today’s kids are exposed to more toxins than ever before in Air Cleaning chemicals in the home; out-gassing from carpet glue, furniture, synthetic clothing, thousands of chemicals Water

Poor water quality a problem in every state in the U.S.. Water is treated with Flouride and Chlorine. Both are carcinogens and poisons

Food Convenience foods; chemical vitamins, (like Flintstones)

The Air In Our Homes Is Considered To Be One Of The “Top 5 Health Concerns”

According To The EPA

There are poisons in the air in your home; Dangerous Household & Personal Care Products In industry, workers are required to wear special gloves, goggles and even respirators when using some of the exact same products found in just about every home. We use these same chemicals at home with little or not protection or warning.

Many poisonings happen slowly by gradual skin absorption and by daily exposure to toxins in the air in the home. (Nancy S. Green, “Stop Poisoning Our Children”, The Noble Press, 1991)

Poisons from carpet, furniture, plastics, dry cleaning, etc. A baby crawling on the floor breathes the toxin equivalent of 4 cigarettes a day from molds, mildew, fungi, outgasing of carpets, dust mites, etc. (Scientific American)

Why is our water such a concern? Every year at least 255 metric tons of hazardous chemical wastes are dumped into our nation’s environment. These toxic substances find their way to the water table. Many cancer causing chemicals are added to our drinking water to “clean it up”. Chlorine is a special problem. “Research indicates the incidence of cancer is 44% higher among those who use chlorinated water.” Dr. Robert Harris, environmental scientist, White House Advisory Council, 1980

“There is an increased evidence for an association between rectal, colon and bladder cancer and chlorinated drinking water.” President’s Council on environmental Quality, Dec. 1980

In addition to drinking pure water, make sure your child gets enough water! 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated

Lack of water is the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue, and may be the cause of joint and back pain in adults.

Even mild dehydration can trigger fuzzy short term memory, or trouble focusing.

Drinking adequate water daily (your body weight divided by 2 in ounces. 100# person would need 50 ounces daily) decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%; breast cancer by 79%, and bladder cancer by 50%.

Pure water flushes poisons out of our system. It’s the natural answer for thirst. Carbonated Beverages-Cause critically needed calcium to be removed from the body.

Did you know what else “Coke” can be used for?
*To clean corrosion from car battery terminals
*To remove rust spots from chrome bumpers
*To loosen a rusted bolt (apply a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes)
Did you know that:
-Coke will dissolve a nail in about 4 days
-To carry Coca-Cola syrup concentrate the commercial truck must use the Hazardous material cards reserved for Highly Corrosive Materials.

Today’s Food
Food today isn’t always real food. There are hundreds of chemicals in food (we eat stuff we can’t even pronounce) Lots of soils can’t grow healthy food any more.(we’ve used too many chemicals and mis-managed our soil for too many years)

WAY too much sugar in our diets…. (ooops) (per serving…)
-10 teaspoons in Raisin Bran
-11 teaspoons in strawberry yogurt
-3 teaspoons in tomato soup
-8 teaspoons in Hi C
The primary ingredient in Flintstone’s is sugar.
Some Catsups and Peanut Butters are 25% Sugar. (Now you know why Your Kids like them so much) A kid can easily be eating 2 pounds of sugar every week. (without ever taking the lid off the sugar bowl)

Some “Sugar Facts”
-It depletes the immune system (12 tsp. Of sugar will decrease the immune system’s ability to destroy bacteria by 60%. Start with a breakfast of sugary cereal, a pop tart, and the immune system is already operating below optimum.)

-It depletes the nervous system. Critical vitamins and minerals that are needed for the nervous system are used up as sugar is being processed by the body.

-It increases cholesterol. Raised insulin levels cause LDLs (the bad guys”) to remain highly active, and keep the “good guys” HDL from being used.

-It makes children “Hyper” Insulin levels rise, then drop.(*A drug like effect similar to using “uppers” and “downers”)

Our diet choices are often due to the fact that most of us are in a HURRY!
-Both parents working outside the home
-Not enough time to shop for fresh veggies…no time to cook.
-Kids have soccer practice, piano lessons…..
-Bills to PAY.. people to see…places to GO!!!!

What’s a family to do?

Some suggestions:
Have a family “talk”
Decide on what’s most important
Make small changes
Build on your successes
Delegate jobs; Kids can help with laundry!
Kids can help with the menu planning and grocery shopping.
Pray Together Have fun together
Do your best to create a home that is filled with Love Beauty Gratitude Laughter Forgiveness Respect

Immediately STOP using toxic chemicals in your home!!

Of the – more than – 17,000 chemicals that appear in common household products, only 30% of them have been adequately tested for negative effects on our health.

The FDA cannot review or approve of personal care product ingredients before they are sold to the public.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has linked over 150 Household chemicals to:
Allergies
Birth defects
Cancer Psychological abnormalities

Some more suggestions: Continue to educate yourself and tell others….

There are healthy solutions to the problems that today'’ families face…
Look for:
-An Air Purification System that will purify the air in your home, effectively reducing molds, bacteria, gases, sub-micron particulates (that conventional filtration cannot remove)

-A Water Purification System that will remove chlorine, flouride and other harmful substances and give you family delicious tasting water. Look for a Reverse Osmosis System to effectively reduce flouride.
Look for
-Healthy and Effective Personal Care Products that have been proven to never harm a living cell.

-Organic Food Supplements from a company that can prove, through scientific research that they are absorbed into the blood stream in the amounts listed on the label. “Non-Natural” or synthetic “vitamins” won’t feed the brain, the immune system, or help build healthy cells

Other suggestions….
-Encourage Good Eating Habits: Fresh Fruits and Veggies every single day
-Daily Exercise! TV OFF during meals – Eat together at the table. Make sure your kids get plenty of sleep!!! (the body grows and heals during sleep) Routine Bedtime and naps are good for everybody!

Adding Food Supplements makes sense for everyone.

Look for..

-The best quality soy protein you can find: Organic, water-washed, living enzyme soy protein powder. Most on the market are alcohol-washed which destroys the living enzymes.

-Organic food supplements, NOT synthetic, drug store or health food store type “vitamins”. The cells of the body must eat FOOD. That’s why a food supplement works so well. Taking synthetic vitamins are like eating a plastic orange.

-Food supplements that are alive with living enzymes. The company must have a process that keeps the food enzymes alive.

Recipe for "Healthy Butter"

1 cup cold-pressed organic safflower oil
1 cup butter
2 T. water
2 T. powdered milk
1/4 t. lecithin

Usually I just blend the oil and butter together (omiting the other ingredients) in my blender and pour into a ceramic tub and place in frig. I tried it with olive oil once and found it to be abit too powerful. Maybe you could use a mix of 2 oils.

Burn/Healing Testimony

Editors Note: Product and manufacturer's name's have been omitted/changed to meet the internet guidelines from the manufacturer.

By Rod Larkin
This info is long overdue and I share this for two reasons--that it may be of help to others in the future who suffer a severe burn, and to let others know the important role Barefoot products play in the healing process. Also, I am talking about more than just the nutrition products.

On Sept. 10th of 2000, I had a freak accident in the morning at our cabin. It was raining lightly and I was putting some big logs on our campfire that had been burning for 3 days. As I stepped to the edge of the pit I slipped on a muddy patch, both feet went out from under me and my right foot shot into the deep bed of coals. The tennis shoe I was wearing melted instantly as well as about 40% of the skin on my foot from ankle to ankle.

I jumped up and ran into the cabin, grabbing a gallon jug of all purpose household cleanser (H) that was sitting by the door, stuck my foot in the sink, turned on the cold water, poured on H and began to wash the mud, ashes, and sheets of skin off.

The water and H took the sting away and at the time it didn't look or feel much worse than a good sunburn. After cleanup, I applied more H to the burn (feels good!) and then I put my socks and workboots on and went on about my day, until about 4:00 when my foot began to let me know it wasn't very happy.

I packed up things and headed home and called on the cell phone to see if Brenda McCumons (E.R. Nurse, friend, and business leader) was home and could take a look at my foot when I got home. When she saw my foot that night, nearly 12 hours after the burn, she knew in an instant I had a major, major problem.

She had hospital-grade burn treatment supplies and took care of my foot that night and the next 48 hours until I got in to see my doc, about 72 hours after the burn.I had no skin over my ankles and the back achilles tendon was exposed. Mostly all 2nd, and quite a bit of 3rd degree burn. The doc said it looked like it had been well-taken care of (which it had!).

He said with the severity of burn/skin loss I had, it would take several months to heal and that the achilles may need skin grafting. The biggest concern was the risk of infection. The doc prescribed silvadine cream, pain meds, and daily soaking of my foot for 30' in warm water and betadine solution.
The first few days, a few minutes was all I could tolerate at best. Brenda "suggested" the supplements I would want to take to aid in the healing process. So I began what I thought would be the long road back to recovery.

INFECTION? Not with Barefoot's Secret Germicide! (G)

Each day as I would have to epxose the burn, soak my foot, and put new dressing on, everything in the surrounding work area I sprayed with a mild G solution, including everything that would come in contact with or near my skin, including my hands. This eliminated my risk for infection on the outside.

The supplement regime I was on helped to eliminate the risk of infection on from the inside. The result? Zero infection the entire time and no anti-biotics were ever used.

HEALING AND GROWING NEW SKIN! My obvious challenge was to stay off my feet as much as possible and consume a lot of skin building nutrients toregenerate 3 layers of new skin. I continued to soak my foot daily for over 6 weeks. Each daily exposure to air could allow for infection to begin.

If you know Brenda McCumons M.S. story, you know what a huge believer she is in soy protein and vitamin/herb supplementation. I needed to consume LOTS of any nutrients that would be associated with building new skin cells.

From the first day after the burn, this is what I took every single day without out fail:
2 Energizing soy protein drinks, 4-5 tbsp per drink, mixed in water, total of 8-10 tbsp a day.

Twice daily the following supplements...... 4 Vita-E Plus, 5 Sus Rel Vita-C 500 mg, 3 Zinc, 1 Carotomax, 3 Vita-Lea, 3 B Complex, 2 Calcium Complex, 2 Formula 1, 2 Herb Lax, 4 Garlic, 3 Lecithin. So X those amounts by two and that was my daily intake of supplements.

I also took some other supplements I usually take anyway, but not in increased amounts such as the above. These two rounds of protein and supps were my breakfast and lunchessentially. Consuming that much protein and nutrients, I was not very hungry and ate a light dinner consisting of a meat protein of some sort and lots of vegetables and produce.

I returned to the doc 2 weeks to the day after the burn. He did adouble-take when he saw my foot. I asked three questions- how long for total healing of new skin over the open wound? A few more weeks was the reply, down from months as predicted 2 weeks earlier!

Will I need skin grafting? At the rate you are healing, probably not was the reply. My 3rd question was, when do I need to come in again? You don't need to as long as no infection begins.

I never went back. In just under 7 weeks my foot had 100% new skin replacement. Of course this was new, tissue paper thin skin and the need to bandage and pad it and be very cautious to protect it from reopening was critical.

I customized my own, shoes, boots, etc (using scissors, knives, and tape!) to allow me to get about without anything rubbing or coming in contact with my new skin.

Barefoot's Secret Skin Care! The next step was to feed and nourish this new skin from the outside as well as I was from the inside with my supplements. Now that I had complete skin closure, I began a twice daily regime using Secret Skin Care products.

I applied the Calming treatemnt, then PM Repair, then Hydrating Moistuizer. My skin began to thicken and regenerate at warp speed. At 9 weeks after the accident, I was able to put on my hunting clothes and(regular) boots and go out for the Nov 15 Deer opener!

It will be 4 months since the burn on January 10. My skin is 100% smooth, no ridges, uneven skin, or scar tissue. I've been able to wear my normal shoes for several weeks now. More than half of the burn area is now normal skin color (with hair!) and you could not detect it was burned.

The areas of deepest burn are still a dark red, but shrinking in size each week. Other than a slight area of still sensitive skin over my achilles, I have no reminder of being burned. No hot or cold sensitivity.
*******************************************************
Note- The manufacturer of Barefoot's Products does not promote or endorse in any way my use of the products mentioned for the treatment of burns. I was responsible for my own health and made my own decisions and choices with regards to what products I used and how I used them. I also know that I made the right choices and what I did worked and can not be disputed!

Hear from those who have used this incredible product:

Dear Amber,
Thank you for letting me try your AirSource last week - I'm just thrilled! My son, Brandon who has had a runny nose since he was born 3 years ago, hasn't even sniffed in the past 5 days! My 7 month old baby is sleeping better at night - as is my husband and 5 year old! But the person who has seen the biggest change is me...

I was diagnosed with severe, sudden asphycsic asthma - the worst kind - when I was 7 years old and have battled with tough breathing for the past 18 years. I've been on every drug available from inhalers to steroids but nothing has worked.

I was sent to Colorado to the National Center for Respiratory Disease and was diagnosed with a second serious problem - Vocal Cord Dysfunction (no, it doesn't have anything to do with your voice) for which there is currently no treatment or cure. I've gone into respiratory arrest twice, had seizures, and have been intubated.

I've spent hours in the ER more times than I can count - including the RED Room which is reserved for the most serious of ER patients - and days upon days in the hospital - including Intensive Care. I wheeze when I climb the stars or when I carry my 7 month old out to the car. I wheeze the most at night and am attached to my nebulizer constantly. I wheeze when I laugh too hard or bag my own groceries (thank goodness for Simon Delivers!). Sometimes I wheeze for what appears to be no reason at all.

My asthma has significantly improved over the past week since I've been running my AirSource - my whole family is in awe! I'm off the steroids and haven't used my nebulizer for a week now. I'm using my inhaler about half as often as usual - even my chronic headaches are gone! I can't thank you enough for sharing the AirSource with me - I'll be sending you lots of referrals, asthmatics tend to know other asthmatics! Take care!

Deb Femling

A wonderful AirSource testimonial from Marianne Bouris of Wyoming!

Hi Everyone, Greetings from Wyoming.!

I have yet another success story since my Salon story, in which I had gotten a perm. I had taken the Air Source unit with me because I knew the smell would be bad. It really took care of the Perm odor and everyone in the salon was impressed. The salon ended up buying it. They report still being very happy with it, after having it for 5 months.

Does wonders for the salon, not just taking care of the perm smell, but the nail smell, hair coloring, etc. My latest story takes place in an small industrial area in Wyoming. My office is at a warehouse, very closed, has windows but they do not open. It is also where the transportation dept is and the bus drivers park their buses. You can image the fumes at times.

So I having to work there between being at my schools, I decided to take an Air Source in and see what it could do. Within the first day the odors were disappearing. Bus drivers were coming up to me and asking about this gadget. They couldn't believe how fresh the building smelled.

Then the real test came later that week. In one area of the building they were varnishing the cabinets. The smell was BAD! It gave me and others quite a headache, so we placed it in the area were they were varnishing. Within hours there was NO nasty varnish smell. Air Source had done its job! My headache got better and we could all breath easier.

But the story doesn't end here, that weekend they were having a science workshop in one of the meeting room located in the same building. I once again placed the Air Source unit in that room for the weekend. The people who attended the workshop commented that they felt less tired and more refreshed.

One lady in particular, who has bad allergies, commented that she felt better in just the first hour in the room than in years. She wants one to try at home and of course this warehouse definitely wants one and possibly two. Thank you AirSource. You're quite a hit around here!

Indoor Human Health Risks

The Environmental Protection Agency 's Draft Final Report," Healthy Buildings, Healthy People: A Vision for the 21st Century " is a call to action for us all to work together to improve the indoor environment. The risks associated with poor indoor air quality—asthma, cancer, reproductive and development problems, and other health effects—are explained in the following Chapter 1 of the Report.
ASTHMA An estimated 27 million Americans suffer from asthma (U.S. EPA 1999). In addition, about 5,000 deaths occur yearly from asthma—an increase of 33 percent in the last decade (Mannino et al. 1998). Consequently, the social and economic costs are large. Among chronic diseases, asthma is the number one cause of absenteeism from school (Pope et al. 1993).
Asthma cost an estimated $6.2 billion in the United States in 1990, including direct medical and indirect non-medical costs combined. An update of this figure would fall in the range of $7 to $9 billion in 1998 dollars (Weiss et al. 1992). Some groups in this country (e.g., children, certain minorities, seniors, and low-income, urban populations) are disproportionately affected by asthma.
An estimated 1.8 million people required emergency room services for asthma in 1995. Mortality rates associated with asthma among African-Americans, as a whole, are two- to three-fold higher than those among whites. Mortality rates for African-American children are fivefold higher than those for their white peers (Mannino et al. 1998).
While research has not yet explained the rise in the incidence of asthma, nor all the reasons why individuals first contract it, there is general agreement that controlling indoor exposures is an important protective measure (NAS 2000).
Recently the National Academy of Sciences/Institute of Medicine issued a report on asthma and indoor air quality, confirming that dust mites and other allergens, microorganisms, and some chemicals found indoors are triggers for asthma. In addition, the report stated there was sufficient evidence regarding associations between ETS, in preschool-aged children, and house dust mites and the development of asthma (NAS 2000).
ETS may significantly aggravate symptoms of asthma for 200,000 children and may affect as many as 1,000,000 children to some extent (U.S. EPA 1992). CANCER A number of indoor contaminants, such as asbestos, radon, tobacco smoke, and benzene, are known human carcinogens. Other indoor contaminants, such as certain chlorinated solvents, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, aldehydes, and pesticides, are considered likely to cause cancer in humans.
The National Academy of Sciences, in its latest report on radon health science (NAS 1998), concluded that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the country. NAS has estimated that about 12 percent of the lung cancer deaths in the United States are linked to radon. They calculate the number of lung cancer cases attributable to radon exposure to range from 15,000 to 22,000 annually. Environmental tobacco smoke is estimated to cause an additional 3,000 lung cancer deaths in nonsmokers each year (U.S. EPA 1992). Other forms of cancer have also been found to be associated with indoor pollutants (e.g., leukemia with benzene; bladder cancer with ETS).
REPRODUCTIVE AND DEVELOPMENTAL EFFECTS During the period 1991 to 1994, almost 900,000 children had elevated blood levels, which can cause a variety of developmental delays, including effects on intelligence quotient (IQ); vision, hearing and stature deficits; and learning disabilities (U.S. DHHS 1997a). Several studies indicate that common indoor pollutants such as lead and ETS can also impair fetal development.
A California report estimates that 9,700 to 18,600 cases of low birth weight in infants are caused each year by ETS (NCI 1999). Many other environmental agents, including a number of chemicals commonly found indoors (e.g., tobacco smoke, some pesticides, lead and other heavy metals, alcohols, and plastic additives), are suspected of causing developmental toxicity in humans (U.S. EPA 1991a, NCI 1999).
Endocrine disruptors (e.g., certain pesticides and plasticizers), which affect the normal function of sex and thyroid hormones, present a new area of concern for reproductive toxicity. Adverse effects on a developing child may result from exposure prior to conception in either parent, exposure during pregnancy, or post-natal exposure.
These effects range from low birth weight to genetic diseases to lower IQs and infertility. While the proportion of reproductive and developmental effects due to indoor environmental factors is currently unknown, the impact could be serious. Approximately 3 percent of newborn children have one or more significant malformations at birth. By age one, about 3 percent more are recognized to have serious developmental defects.
Lifetime health-care costs for children born each year with birth defects are estimated to be more than $8 billion.
OTHER HEALTH EFFECTS Indoor environments can cause or amplify many other health effects as well. The American Heart Association estimates that 35,000 to 40,000 cardiovascular deaths per year among nonsmokers can be attributed to ETS exposure (Taylor et al. 1991).
Recent studies have shown that, compared to those who had not been exposed, ETS was associated with a 20 percent increase in the progression of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) (Howard et al. 1998). Carbon monoxide (CO) poising associated with the improper use and maintenance of fuel-burning appliances kills more than 200 people per year in this country and results in about 10,000 admissions to hospital emergency rooms for treatment (U.S. CPSC 1997).
An additional 600 to 700 accidental deaths from CO poisoning occur indoors from other sources, including automobiles (Cobb and Etzel 1991). The agent for Legionnaires' disease, a potentially deadly pneumonia which affects 10,000 to15, 000 people each year, is associated with cooling systems, whirlpool baths, humidifiers, food market vegetable misters, and other indoor sources, including residential tap water (EPA et al. 1994; U.S. DHHS 1997b).
Effects associated with toxins from indoor fungi and bacteria range from short-term irritation to immunosuppression and cancer (EPA et al. 1994). Studies show that symptoms of sick building syndrome (SBS) may be caused or intensified by indoor environmental problems (U.S. EPA 1991b, U.S. EPA et al. 1994).
The term "sick building syndrome," first employed in the 1970s, described a spectrum of specific and nonspecific complaints reported by a population of building occupants. These symptoms can be associated with their presence in the building. These complaints may also result from causes other than SBS, including illness contracted outside the building, acute sensitivity (e.g., allergies), job-related stress or dissatisfaction, and other factors.
Data are insufficient to thoroughly evaluate many SBS problems. Reference United States Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Air and Radiation, EPA Report 402-K-00-002, March 2000

Air pollution stunts growth of teen lungs...

Existing controls inadequate in United States, study finds
Reuters
Updated: 5:26 p.m. ET Sept. 8, 2004

BOSTON - In the first long-term study of air pollution’s effects on children, researchers reported Wednesday that contaminated air stunts lung development in teenagers and the effects could extend well into adulthood.
The findings, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, show that existing pollution controls in many parts of the United States are inadequate.
The researchers, who followed 1,759 children in a dozen southern California communities, said pollution is probably having a similar effect on children elsewhere.
The youngsters were tested for eight years beginning at age 10, just before their lungs began their final maturation spurt.
James Gauderman of the University of Southern California and his colleagues found that 7.9 percent of the 18-year-olds in the highest pollution areas had lung capacities that were less than 80 percent of what they should have been.
Among teenagers subjected to the least-polluted air, only 1.6 percent had underperforming lungs.
The damage was seen in teens who had never smoked and had never had asthma.
“This is some of the most convincing evidence that air pollution has chronic effects,” Gauderman told Reuters. “We see the effects in all kids. And it’s an unavoidable exposure. It’s not like smoking, where you can advise people to stop. This is a day-in-day-out kind of exposure.”
The damage, he said, may be permanent.
“By the time they reach their late teens, their lung development has pretty much stopped,” said Gauderman.
Teens face greater risksAt that age, lower lung capacity may translate into wheezing during a cold or a bout with the flu, or make it harder to recover after an illness, he said.
But because adults lose about 1 percent of their lung capacity each year, beginning in their late 20s, teens with lame lungs face greater risks if serious illness subsequently strikes.
“In your 50s and beyond, low lung function is a major risk factor for death from respiratory illness or heart disease,” he said.
Although southern California is notorious for its bad air, Gauderman said pollution levels had declined in the last two decades so the amount of dirty air there is comparable to most urban centers.
In an editorial in the Journal, C. Arden Pope of Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, said the findings showed that ”the control of air pollution represents an important opportunity to prevent disease.”

Group Links Nail Polish to Birth Defects

November 29, 2000Web posted at: 11:27 a.m. EST (1627 GMT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- An environmental group Tuesday warned women of childbearing age to avoid using nail polish that contains a chemical that has been shown to cause birth defects in laboratory animals.

A report by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) said the chemical in question is called dibutyl phthalate or DBP. Phthalates are a class of industrial plasticizers that were invented in the 1930s. They are often used in cosmetics because they make nail polish flexible, help bleed the chemicals of fragrances, and help lotion better penetrate the skin. They aren't always required to be labeled on the products.

Lab animals given dibutyl phthalate had higher numbers of offspring with birth defects, especially of the male reproductive system.

In September, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released the results of a study that tested 289 adults aged 20-60 for seven metabolites associated with exposure to various phthalates and found it was present in all of those tested, with women of childbearing age having the highest levels.

Jane Houlihan, Senior Analyst at the EWG, said women between the ages of 15-45 are probably exposed to dibutyl phthalate through cosmetics and particularly nail polish.
"We think that women of childbearing are should avoid all exposures to dibutyl phthalate when they're considering becoming pregnant, when they're pregnant or when they're nursing," Houlihan said.

But a spokesman for The Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association said nail polishes and cosmetics are safe.
"The Food and Drug Administration, the Environmental Protection Agency, Health Canada and other scientific bodies in Europe, North America, and Japan have examined phthalates and allow their use. Phthalates were also reviewed by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review, an independent body that reviews the safety of ingredients used in cosmetics. CIR found them to be safe for use in cosmetics.

Consumers can have confidence in their cosmetics given their oversight by FDA and a long history of safe use," said Dr. Jerry McEwen, vice-president of science at CTFA.

Still, there are several unanswered questions about the chemical, including what level of exposure causes illness.

"By directly measuring levels of phthalate metabolites in urine, we have markedly improved our understanding of human exposure to phthalates and also improved our ability to determine potential health risks from exposure," said John Brock, a senior chemist at CDC.

Meanwhile, the Environmental Working Group says male birth defects have been on the rise since the 1970s. In Puerto Rico, one study found girls who were experiencing premature puberty had high levels of a different phthalate in their bodies. The EWG said the last tests for safe close exposure were done in rats in 1953. They're calling for more testing and clearer product labeling.

"We believe manufacturers should fully label their products and that the label should be legible for consumers," Houlihan said. "We're also advising that pregnant women avoid exposures to dibutyl phthalate even while they're trying to get pregnant, while they're pregnant or while they're nursing."

The CDC said additional studies are needed to examine possible sources of the exposures, as well as the need for more insight into the safety and health effects of these chemicals.

Beauty Procedures and Pregnancy... Whats' Safe and What's not.

By Carma Haley Shoemaker

Manic ManicuresMany pregnant women find that their nails tend to grow more quickly, producing a need to groom them more often. What once was a three or four times a year task now becomes a once-a-month visit.

"Normally, my nails break and are very brittle so I keep them short,"says Crystal Riggs, a small business owner from Seneca, S.C. "I only have to trim or groom my nails every couple months because they just don't grow. But during my pregnancy, my nails grew longer, stronger, held up to everything including kids and dishes. I loved the fact that I "needed" to go to the salon to get my nails done, something I normally wouldn't do."

Visit any manicurist and you will see the finest collection of chemicals, from nail polish and removers to oils, paints and skin treatments, all believed to be safe. But according to a recent report from the Food and Drug Administration, research indicates that chemicals in nail polish, nail polish removers and the like, namely methyl methacrylate and acetonitrile (a chemical that breaks down into cyanide when swallowed), are in fact dangerous and can cause numerous health problems including skin irritation, contact dermatitis, rashes, poisoning and even death. These facts alone cause a concern and fear of manicures.

But according to manicurist, Heather Jacobson, it all depends upon the chemicals used and who uses them. "Not all manicurists use the same products or use them in the same way," says Jacobson. "For example, I use mostly natural or biodegradable products and the nail polish I use on my customers is edible." It's not that you could eat it right from the bottle, but if you do ingest it... as most women do from time to time from biting their nails, licking their fingers, etc. Ă¢ it won't harm you, as it has only natural ingredients. But others may still use products that contain chemicals that are not safe during pregnancy or otherwise. It is best to ask your manicurist or request she/he use natural products. And if you're not sure, simply skip the nail polish and have your nails buffed for a natural shine.

Barefoot's nail polish has no phalates, formaldehyde or Toluene. Other nail polishes are supposed to be recycled at your local gas stations. Shaklee’s can be thrown away in your garbage. Yet measures of its long-lasting and chipware qualities are equivalent to the top of the line nail polishes.

Question to Dr. Jim Greene --Director Product FormulationPersonal Care and Household

I have a customer whose nails yellow everytime she uses nail polish. She has not used -- yet. What causes this? She said that other women she knows complains of this also.

Dr. Jim Green's reply:.
This is usually caused by exposure to formaldehyde that cross-links theprotein in the nail and turns it yellow. She should try one nail with thebase/top coat for several days to make sure; but, there is less chance with a formaldehyde-free products...Jim

Do you know the history Behind All Purpose Cleaner (H)?

It started in Dr's lab, where he was experimenting with soybeans. There was an explosion, so they called in the clean-up crew. Only cleaning up was a cinch.

That was the beginning of All Purpose Cleaner (H), which doesn't even have a patent on it because the company doesn't intend to disclose the formula. So far no one has been able to reverse-engineer it, either, though they've tried.

H is a harmless cleaner that leaves no residue. It breaks down into carbon dioxide and water vapor.
It's colorless and odorless, so the company adds a little blue color and some oil of bitter lemon so we don't drink it by mistake. We don't want to be TOO clean inside.
Here are some more uses.

1. To strengthen my pantyhose. I found out if you wash them in cold water with a drop of H, they last lots longer.

2. To get the grit out of spinach. I don't care if spinach from the store is triple-washed, it can still be gritty. You can wash it a fourth time, and some sand will still cling. But if you put it in a basin of cold water and add one drop of H, all the sand and grit will be released and will drop instantly to the bottom of the basin in a most satisfying way. Works for dirty potatoes, too.

3. To take the pain out of burns. If you get a burn, immediately pour on the H. The pain will subside, and even blisters have gone away.

4. Prespotting my shirts. I seem to attract oily spots on my shirts. I keep a small bottle of H in the bathroom so when I undress, I can put it immediately on the spots. It works for ketchup as well as butter.... Then I put the shirt right into the hamper. It doesn't matter if it sits for a few days -- the stain won't set, and the H won't harm the fabric.

5. Keeping the doors from squeaking. I really like H better than WD-40 for putting on the hinges of squeaky doors. If I spill some, it won't stain the rug or the paint or my hands or my shirt. And the door stops driving me crazy.

6. Keeps my hands from getting grimy-looking when I'm out in the garden. I put it on my hands like lotion before I go out. I then play in the dirt all I want, and then wash my hands with the garden hose. The H rises up out of all the creases and cracks and cleans my hands from beneath the dirt and stains.

In 1991, the Akron (Ohio) Regional Poison Center reported that "death has been reported following ingestion of 16mg/kg of fluoride. Only 1/10 of an ounce of fluoride could kill a 100 pound adult. According to the Center, "fluoride toothpaste contains up to 1mg/gram of fluoride." Even Proctor and Gamble, the makers of Crest, acknowledge that a family-sized tube "theoretically contains enough fluoride to kill a small child."
Information for best choices, healthy natural toothpaste. Let this history od harmful fluoride use lead you to use safe natural brands of toothpaste. Have the best and safest results.

Fluorides have been used to modify behavior and mood of human beings. It is a little known fact that fluoride compounds were added to the drinking water of prisoners to keep them docile and inhibit questioning of authority, both in Nazi prison camps in World War II and in the Soviet gulags in Siberia.

Behavior of children, market and brand ingredients which are natural are best.Fluorides are medically categorized as protoplasmic poisons, which is why they are used to kill rodents. The September 18, 1943 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, states, "fluorides are general protoplasmic poisons, changing the permeability of the cell membrane by inhibiting certain enzymes. The exact mechanisms of such actions are obscure." See this history and use the best and safe brands of toothpaste.

Fluoride toothpaste consumption by human beings increases the general cancer death rate. In 1975 Dr. John Yiamouyiannis published a preliminary survey which showed that people in fluoridated areas have a higher cancer death rate than those in non-fluoridated areas. The National Cancer Institute attempted to refute the studies.

Later in 1975 Yiamouyiannis joined with Dr. Dean Burk, chief chemist of the National Cancer Institute (1939-1974) in performing other studies which were then included in the Congressional Record by Congressman Delaney, who was the original author of the Delaney Amendment, which prohibited the addition of cancer-causing substances to food used for human consumption. Both reports confirmed the existence of a link between fluoridation and cancer. (Note: Obviously Dr. Burk felt free to agree with scientific truth only after his tenure at National Cancer Institute ended, since his job depended on towing the party line).

History shows that natutal toothpaste is best, for both children and adults. Sodium Fluorides have little or no effect on decay prevention in humans. In 1990 Dr. John Colquhoun was forced into early retirement in New Zealand after he conducted a study on 60,000 school children and found no difference in tooth decay between fluoridated and unfluoridated areas.

He additionally found that a substantial number of children in fluoridated areas suffered from dental fluorosis. He made the study public. There is no scientific data that shows that sodium-fluoride mouth rinses and tablets are safe for human use. In 1989 a study by Hildebolt, et al. on 6,000 school children contradicted any alleged benefit from the use of sodium fluorides. A 1990 study by Dr. John Yiamouyiannis on 39,000 school children contradicted any alleged benefits from the use of sodium fluorides.

In 1992 Michael Perrone, a legislative assistant in New Jersey, contacted the FDA requesting all information regarding the safety and effectiveness of fluoride tablets and drops.
After 6 months of stalling, the FDA admitted they had no data to show that fluoride tablets or drops were either safe or effective. They informed Perrone that they will "probably have to pull the tablets and drops off the market."

Information about the history of natural toothpaste with organic ingredients. Best ingredients are the safest. The fact that sodium-fluoride toothpastes and school based mouth rinses are packaged in aluminum accentuates the effect on the body.
In 1976, Dr. D. Allman and coworkers from Indiana University School of Medicine fed animals 1 part-per-million (ppm) fluoride and found that in the presence of aluminum, in a concentration as small as 20 parts per billion, fluoride is able to cause an even larger increase in cyclic AMP levels. Cyclic AMP inhibits the migration rate of white blood cells, as well as the ability of the white blood cell to destroy pathogenic (disease-causing) organisms.

(Note: It is no small accident that toothpaste tubes containing fluoride are often made of aluminum). Interesting history and information of harmful effects of not using natural ingredients.
